Bar Só Ló - Rones, arte y hablando en plata

Basta con los banalidades! | Throw triviality in the trash at Bar Só Ló.

Só Ló has more than 80 rums.
We spent a lot of time at Bar Só Ló - located at 18 c. Margarit - during the world cup, watching matches and drinking beers with friends. But this establishment, with its bo-ho atmosphere, second-hand furniture and cosy corners is best enjoyed as a a night bar, cocktail in hand, from 6 in the evening til 2 in the morning- except Mondays and Tuesday, when the bar closes.
Or a glass of rum. The at around 80 different types, the bar has the widest range in the barrio or perhaps even the whole city. You could be enjoying something from Nicaragua, Jamaica or Cuba whilst admiring one of the paintings that adorn the walls, listening to the music (which is sometimes live). There are also home-made flavours available, featuring a variety of different fruits and spices.

The thing you won't be able to drink is Coca-Cola. In his constant struggle against the overly predictable in the world of Barcelona's night-life, the proprietor serves Fritz Cola instead. Neither is Cosimo worried to speak frankly about the barrio of Poble-sec. Although I don't share it, it's quite refreshing to hear another point of view. Watch the interview (below) and see for yourself...

"36"- The Bar Formerly Known As "Bukowski"

Friendly service plus great wine, not over-priced. Servicio amable, y buen vino.

UNFORTUNATELY 36 HAS NOW CLOSED.

If you ever need to get hold of me and the mobile network is down, and I'm not at home or drinking in La Fontaine, your next best bet it to make tracks for 36, a bar/restaurant that until its first birthday a few weeks before Christmas was known as Bukowski.

Over the last thirteen months the chief attraction has been its peerless white house wine and wonderful cold tapas of sun-dried tomatoes, aubergines and cheese, all seeped in olive oil, all consumed at a cosy table with a great view of the street life at the corner of c. Magarit and c. Elkano.

Last night we thought is was high time we were a little more adventurous with the menu and ordered something different from the menu. So we chose empanadas (€5 for two),  a quesadilla with guacamole (€6) pork and mango with lime and chili dressing (€8.50).

The cook freely admitted buying pre-cooked pastry for the empanadas. In any case, it didn't matter to us, as, thanks to a fantastic filling. The quesadilla was a good size, and had an even better flavour.

But it was the pork that gained top marks. Because of that alone, we will be returning try such other dishes as Thai-style chicken curry (€8.50) and chorizo with chimichurri (€7).

Juan pours wine whilst Stuart's hummus & poppadums take centre stage.

A great place for a drink or a meal, "La Fontaine" on the
corner of c. de la Franca Xica 20 and c. Concordia 45, has a
distinctive red decor (partially painted by my own fair
hands) adorned with some striking modern art - all for
sale, of course. And when Stuart or right-hand-man Juan
put on the play list we sorted out for their i-Pod, the
music's pretty good, too.

The food options are highly eclectic, and kick off with
hummus, filo pastry parcels and various salads, plus some
sensational soups, then progress to dishes as varied as
tagines, curries and Chinese noodles. Deserts are good,
but crowned by an exemplary interpretation of cheesecake.
Average spend is about €15 - 25 per head, and the wine
selection is also great.

If you just turn up for a drink (and we generally do) there's
a good friendly atmosphere, presided over by Stuart and
Juan - the Hinge & Bracket of Poble Sec. Feel free to join
in with the ceaseless comic bickering if you think you can
keep up. La Fontaine is open every day from 1.30ish till
late and they take bookings on 934 433 523.

Below are a few tasty morsels from the Fontaine's tiny
kitchen, plus an interview with the man himself.

People You Need To Know #1 - Stuart McKenna

As promised long ago, here are the words of wisdom from
our good friend Stu. It's not so much an interview as a
musing on life in Poble Sec. Enjoy.
