La Tomaquera - Still Living Up To The Legend?

A smiling plate of butifarra - the Catalan national sausage.

Forget chorizo - the number one sausage in Catalonia is butifarra, a meat-packed monster that can be had at any number of restaurants and bars in the region. It's normally accompanied by alioli - garlic mayonnaise - fried or boiled white beans, and pan con tomate.

As you can see from the picture, La Tomaquera serves its sausage with potatoes -  but I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning...

La Tomaquera has been serving up snails, sausage, grilled meats and quails' eggs and a lot more at 58 c. Margarit for as long as anyone can remember but has recently undergone a change in staff that not everyone has appreciated, after the death of its founder, Manel, last year. And with the new, younger (and some say sulkier) staff have come price rises.

They still don't have a phone, you still can't book and there's no air-conditioning, so much of the rough-and-ready atmosphere of the place remains intact.

But what of the food? Me, Mrs HD, Mrs HD's sister, her husband and their friend Sandra decided to find out after a few drinks at Cervecería Jazz, opposite.

The service was attentive and helpful enough, with our waitress making an effort to speak English to our non-Spanish speaking guests, and there were even menus in our mother tongue.

As previously, there were also complementary quails' eggs and lovely, liquorishy black olives, which we ate with DIY pan con tomate, which will be explained at the end of this posting. We ordered two carafes of chilled house red (!) and two portions of artichokes to start off with.

The vegetables came grilled and garlicky and were delicious - if a little pricy - at a little under €10 per portion (that's a mark up of around 2,000%, given the current price of the raw ingredients, which you can see growing in fields on the way to the airport).

Much better value were the butifarras which were a little over €7 a pop. The only criticism was they were a little salty, but comments I'd seen elsewhere that the alioli was substandard were entirely unfounded.

All in all, the place is still worth visiting and despite the price hikes it still seems pretty good value at around €20 per head, including a carajillo.
